!NetMail
========
Introduction
~~~~~~~~~~~~
!NetMail adds to Archiboard by providing a wimp interface to
the email and conference facilities across a network. Such
support provides staff and students alike with a pleasant
environment in which to process email and conference mail.
Operation
~~~~~~~~~
!NetMail operates across any AUN compliant network. Mail
and conference articles are retrieved from the Archiboard
server using a client server model. There is no need for a file
server in the model we developed, so that users will not
need to log onto a file server to access their mail, they will
only need to have !NetMail running on their machine to
access the Archiboard server.
Interface
~~~~~~~~~
!NetMail is designed to fully use the facilities of the
desktop environment to provide for easy operation. A fully
wimp based interface is provided allowing you to easily
navigate around your mailbox and maintain it. The contents
of your mailbox are presented as a scrollable list from
which you select mail you wish to read and respond to.
Conferences are displayed using a similar format.
Ease of Use
~~~~~~~~~~~
To allow quick navigation around your mailbox or current
conference keyboard shortcuts and buttons are provided. A
personalised address book is also maintained centrally by
the system, allowing you to easily mail an individual or a
group of people regardless of upon which email system they
are based.
Email system transparency & the Internet
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
!NetMail is able to deal with email and conference articles
from a variety of source global networks. Email and
conference articles from the Internet, FidoNet or the local
system are presented and manipulated using identical
displays and techniques. Such an approach means that
users of !NetMail need only to really learn one style of
interface to process email from many sources. This
approach also allows email to be mixed freely between
different global networks, with !NetMail and Archiboard
automatically performing the required mappings.
MIME - The Multimedia email standard
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
!NetMail supports the MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail
Extensions) as standard (compliance with RFC's 1521,1522
& 1523). This means you can easily exchange files and data
of any form (be they Postscript, audio or video clips, graphic
images, whatever) with other similarly equipped users
anywhere in the world. MIME works independently of the
platforms used, so you can send/receive MIME'd data with
other MIME users on Mac's, PC's, UNIX workstations, etc.
Not only does !NetMail support the use of MIME in email,
MIME is also supported for Internet newsgroups
(conferences). In this context MIME is often used as a
means of sending large files of data as separate articles in a
conference. The Archiboard server will automatically
process the separate articles to recreate the original files,
which will appear as attached files to the first article in the
conference.
