  8.  !NetMail adds to Archiboard by providing a wimp interface to 
  9. the email and conference facilities across a network. Such 
  10. support provides staff and students alike with a pleasant 
  11. environment in which to process email and conference mail.

  14. Operation

  17. !NetMail operates across any AUN compliant network. Mail 
  18. and conference articles are retrieved from the Archiboard 
  19. server using a client server model. There is no need for a file 
  20. server in the model we developed, so that users will not 
  21. need to log onto a file server to access their mail, they will 
  22. only need to have !NetMail running on their machine to 
  23. access the Archiboard server.

  26. Interface

  29. !NetMail is designed to fully use the facilities of the
  30. desktop environment to provide for easy operation. A fully
  31. wimp based interface is provided allowing you to easily
  32. navigate around your mailbox and maintain it. The contents
  33. of your mailbox are presented as a scrollable list from
  34. which you select mail you wish to read and respond to.
  35. Conferences are displayed using a similar format.

  38. Ease of Use

  41. To allow quick navigation around your mailbox or current 
  42. conference keyboard shortcuts and buttons are provided. A 
  43. personalised address book is also maintained centrally by 
  44. the system, allowing you to easily mail an individual or a 
  45. group of people regardless of upon which email system they 
  46. are based.

  52. !NetMail is able to deal with email and conference articles 
  53. from a variety of source global networks. Email and 
  54. conference articles from the Internet, FidoNet or the local 
  55. system are presented and manipulated using identical 
  56. displays and techniques. Such an approach means that 
  57. users of !NetMail need only to really learn one style of 
  58. interface to process email from many sources. This 
  59. approach also allows email to be mixed freely between 
  60. different global networks, with !NetMail and Archiboard 
  61. automatically performing the required mappings.

  65. MIME - The Multimedia email standard

  68. !NetMail supports the MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail 
  69. Extensions) as standard (compliance with RFC's 1521,1522 
  70. & 1523). This means you can easily exchange files and data 
  71. of any form (be they Postscript, audio or video clips, graphic 
  72. images, whatever) with other similarly equipped users 
  73. anywhere in the world. MIME works independently of the 
  74. platforms used, so you can send/receive MIME'd data with 
  75. other MIME users on Mac's, PC's, UNIX workstations, etc.
  76. Not only does !NetMail support the use of MIME in email, 
  77. MIME is also supported for Internet newsgroups 
  78. (conferences). In this context MIME is often used as a 
  79. means of sending large files of data as separate articles in a 
  80. conference. The Archiboard server will automatically 
  81. process the separate articles to recreate the original files, 
  82. which will appear as attached files to the first article in the 
  83. conference.
